The KUMS Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration and cooperation. Our research starts with understanding the brain at a basic level, making discoveries that lead to better treatments for mental disorders, substance use, and chronic pain problems. Our nationally recognized research programs focus on neurosciences, molecular biology and genetics, neuro-imaging, epidemiology, autism, addictions, trauma, head injury, chronic pain, serious and persistent mental illnesses, health services, integrated care, dissemination and implementation research. Most importantly, our department is committed to the concept of translational research, making sure that the discoveries we make in the lab are turned into effective treatments that will reach those in need.

We are also heavily invested in training the next generation of researchers. Through a range of research training programs we train undergraduate students, graduate students, medical students, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other aspiring scientists in state-of-the art techniques that will help them unlock the mysteries of the brain and develop the next generation of treatments for psychiatric illnesses around the world.
